A LITTLE HISTORY

As far as we have determined, our house was built around the time of the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906.  Judge Upton, a somewhat cantankerous fellow by reputation, built the house and spent his retirement years at Willow Camp, as the town was known at the time.  This picture, among several that we have, shows the house when it was one of the first structures on the hill.  (You see it in the upper left-hand corner of this image). The amount of redwood used in the construction must have been costly even at that time.  The Airey Hotel, of course, is now a landmark of another kind -- Stinson Beach Market, the town's general store.

Rosetta Klocker Bull purchased the property in 1948.  She moved here from San Francisco after the death of her husband James A. Bull. Rosetta passed away in 1964 and willed the house to her nephew Harry Newhall and his wife Sigrid.  Now, the Newhall's three children own the house jointly. The three children can be seen in the picture below sitting in front of the fireplace which is still a key and functional part of the house.

We have tried to retain the charm and character of the house because its age reflects not one, but several bygone eras.
